Urgent Care vs. Emergency Care

There may be times when you want to see a healthcare provider right away but don’t have a serious or life threatening condition. Review this handy checklist for when to choose an urgent care vs. the hospital emergency room. Click here for a list of Renown Urgent Care Locations and open hours.

When to Visit the ER

Emergency care is necessary when a patient is suffering from a life-threatening medical condition such as:

  • Signs of a heart attack, such as chest pain
  • Signs of stroke, such as sudden onset of numbness in the arms or legs
  • Severe shortness of breath
  • Bleeding that won’t stop after 10 minutes of direct pressure
  • Poisoning
  • Complicated fractures or broken bones
  • Head injury
  • Coughing up or vomiting blood
  • Suicidal or homicidal feelings

When to visit an Urgent Care center

An urgent care center specializes in medical problems that are urgent but not life threatening. Many urgent conditions can be cared for more easily and quickly by an urgent care center, rather than an ER. This is because in an ER, life-threatening conditions take priority over less serious cases. Another benefit of urgent care centers is lower-cost services compared to those performed in the ER, with many health insurance plans offering lower co-pays.

Typical Urgent Care Conditions

  • Colds, flu, fevers, earaches and sore throats
  • Allergic reactions or rashes
  • Respiratory infections
  • Mild asthma
  • Simple cuts, scrapes or burns
  • Fractures or sprains
  • Minor accidents that are not life-threatening
